Overview
This guide walks you through everything you need to activate a Ledger hardware wallet using Ledger.com/Start. The instructions below are intentionally clear and concise: unbox, initialize, back up your recovery phrase, install the Ledger Live app, and transfer funds safely. Read each step fully before you proceed and never skip the security tips.
Setup Steps
-
1 Unbox and InspectEnsure the box is sealed and the tamper-evidence is intact. Ledger devices are shipped with a tamper-proof seal; if anything looks tampered with, stop and contact Ledger support.
 -
2 Power & Select LanguageConnect your Ledger device using the supplied USB cable. Use the device's hardware buttons to choose your language. Never accept remote requests to change language on an already-initialized device.
 -
3 Create a New Wallet / Enter PINChoose "Set up as new device" and create a secure PIN (6–8 digits recommended). Memorize it — do not store the PIN digitally. The PIN protects physical access to your device.
 -
4 Write Down Your Recovery PhraseYour device will display a 24-word recovery phrase (also called seed phrase). Write the words in order on the provided recovery card. Keep it offline and in a secure, fire-proof location. Never share this phrase — anyone with it can access your assets.
 -
5 Install Ledger LiveVisit Ledger.com/Start on your computer or mobile device to download Ledger Live. Install the official application only — verify the site and signature if in doubt. Open Ledger Live and follow the on-screen pairing instructions.
 -
6 Add Accounts & AppsUse the Manager in Ledger Live to install cryptocurrency apps (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) to your device. Then add corresponding accounts in Ledger Live to view balances and generate addresses.
 -
7 Receive a Small Test TransactionAlways send a small test amount first to confirm everything works as expected. Verify the receiving address on the device screen (not just in the computer app) before broadcasting.
 -
8 Store & MaintainStore your Ledger and recovery phrase separately. Keep firmware up to date via Ledger Live, but verify updates through the official app only. Re-check settings periodically.

Security Best Practices
The recovery phrase is the master key. Ledger Staff, support, or any service will never ask for your full 24-word phrase.
Always confirm receiving addresses on the Ledger device screen. This ensures your USB host has not been compromised.
Troubleshooting
Try a different USB cable/port, ensure Ledger Live is updated, and verify your operating system supports the device. Restart your computer if necessary.
If you forget your PIN, you must reset the device and recover wallets with your 24-word phrase. Keep the phrase safe — without it, funds cannot be recovered.
